Domain, hosting and business email: what they cost a year in Puerto Rico

Your domain is your address, hosting is where your site lives, and business email is info@yourbusiness.com. Here's what each one costs a year, why a .com is usually the better pick, and who should own them.

When someone quotes you a website, three words show up that nobody explains: domain, hosting and email. Each one has its own cost, each one renews, and if you don't know who's paying for them, you find out the day something stops working.

Here's what each one is, what a small business in Puerto Rico actually needs, and what it costs a year if you buy it yourself. For the full cost of a website, including building it, see how much a website costs in Puerto Rico.

The short answer

You need three things: a domain (your address, like yourbusiness.com), hosting (where your site lives) and business email (info@yourbusiness.com). At list prices, a .com costs $12 to $25 a year, hosting $3 to $30 a month, and Google Workspace email $7 per person a month on the yearly plan. For most small businesses, a .com makes more sense, because a .pr costs far more.

What a domain, hosting and business email are

The domain: your address

The domain is the name people type to find you: yourbusiness.com. You rent it by the year from a company called a registrar. If you stop renewing it, you lose it, and someone else can register it.

Hosting: where your site lives

Hosting is the computer, always on, that holds your website's files and shows them to whoever visits. Without hosting, the domain points to nothing. A small business site doesn't need anything special: a fast, secure place with https (the padlock in the browser).

Business email: info@yourbusiness.com

Business email uses your domain: info@yourbusiness.com instead of a Gmail or Hotmail address. When you send a quote to a new customer, that address tells them you're an established business. It's a separate service from hosting, and it's usually charged per person.

Mailbox or alias: how many addresses you really need

A Mailbox is one login with its own inbox. An alias is an extra address that delivers into a Mailbox you already have. A barbershop in Bayamón with two barbers who answer messages needs two Mailboxes. If it also wants appointments@ and sales@, those can be aliases that land in the main inbox, without paying for more people.

Count the people who need their own login, not the addresses you want to show.

What a domain, hosting and email cost a year

These are list prices for buying each piece yourself, checked in October 2026. They can change.

What What it's for List price A year
.com domain Your address $12 to $25 a year $12 to $25
.pr domain Puerto Rico address From about $550 the first year Over $1,000 to renew at most registrars
Hosting Where your site lives $3 to $30 a month Twelve months of that
Google Workspace Business Starter Email in the Gmail app $7 per person a month (yearly plan) or $8.40 month to month $84 per person; $168 for 2 people; $420 for 5
Microsoft 365 Business Basic Email in Outlook $7 per person a month Twelve months per person

Google's current prices are on the Google Workspace pricing page. Many hosts and registrars charge little the first year and more at renewal: always look for the renewal price.

.com or .pr: which one is worth it?

A .pr says "Puerto Rico" at a glance, but it costs much more: from about $550 the first year and over $1,000 a year to renew at most registrars. That's why, for a small business, a .com usually makes more sense. If the .com you want is taken, try adding your town (bakerycaguas.com) before you pay for a .pr.

The trap of a domain in someone else's name

A cousin or a former web designer registered the domain in their own name, with their card. Years later they stop answering, the domain doesn't renew, and the website and email go down with it.

Whoever appears as the domain's registrant is its owner. Before you hire anyone, ask whose name it'll be in and what happens if you leave. If you want to move it someday, ICANN's rules for domain holders explain how transfers work.

Turn on auto-renew If you buy the domain yourself, turn on auto-renew and use a card that won't expire soon. Also use an email you check: renewal notices go there.

Renewals: the cost that comes back every year

The domain renews every year. Google Workspace on the yearly plan does too. Hosting can be monthly or yearly. If each one is in a different place, with a different card, sooner or later one gets missed. Write down where each piece is, when it renews and which card pays for it.

How it works with Esensee

With Esensee you don't buy or renew any of this separately. The domain, hosting and email are all inside the Monthly plan, which also covers small changes to your site. Its price is set for each business on the free call, depending on the Plan and how many Mailboxes you need.

  • Starter includes 2 Mailboxes on Standard email, which you check in your phone's mail app. You can switch to Google email as an Add-on.
  • Business includes 5 Mailboxes on Google email, used in the Gmail app.
  • Aliases (sales@, appointments@) are free. Extra Mailboxes are added to the Monthly plan.

Before Launch, we set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC: settings on your domain that prove the mail really comes from you, so it doesn't land in spam. Then we test that messages reach Gmail and Outlook inboxes and leave the email working on your phone. If you have old mail on your domain, we move it over.

While you're on the plan, Esensee's LLC registers and holds the domain, site and email. If you cancel and owe nothing, all of it moves to your name within 14 days. A domain you already owned stays in your name the whole time.
